ACSC439 Mathematical Modelling of Islamic Finance

This is an introductory course which presents basic theories, concepts, analytical techniques in the
area of risk management, insurance, and Takaful. Topics covered in the course include theory of
risk and risk management; identification; measurement and arrangements to deal with risk in a
personal and business situation; insurance coverage; basic features of selected insurance
contracts; principles and models of Takaful; family Takaful contracts; and re-Takaful.
ACSC441 Mathematics of Financial Derivatives
Credits: 3 (3,0,0) Prerequisite: STAT112 and ACSC241
Studying different models of financial economics used in pricing financial derivatives. The concept
of financial forwards and futures, risk management, option pricing, continuous and discrete time
models, mathematical pricing of derivative securities and exotic options.
ACSC444 Advanced Topics in Insurance Management
Credits: 3 (3,0,0) Prerequisite: ACSC381
This course provides a comprehensive overview of advanced topics in insurance management,
focusing on insurance models, operations, regulation, marketing, distribution, underwriting
function, and properties and liability insurance. Students will gain a deep understanding of
insurance models, including expense considerations, and explore the operational aspects of
insurance companies. Additionally, the course covers the regulatory framework governing the
insurance industry, strategies for insurance marketing and distribution, and the intricacies of
underwriting properties and liability risks.
ACSC450 Ethics for Actuaries
Credits: 3 (3,0,0) Prerequisite: ACSC383
This course introduces students to ethical principles and considerations relevant to the actuarial
profession. Topics include ethical frameworks, professional standards, conflicts of interest,
confidentiality, and the application of ethics in actuarial practice.
ACSC467 Business Intelligence (BI)
Credits: 3 (3,0,0) Prerequisite: ACSC225
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the ideas of business intelligence.
Technologies, tools, and procedures for gathering, integrating, analyzing, and presenting
corporate information are referred to as business intelligence (BI). Better business decision-
making is the aim of business intelligence. An overview of BI technology and its application to
organizational strategy and objectives is given in this course. To impart skills for data-driven
decision-making, at least four BI tools—Qlik, Spotfire, PowerBI, and Tableau—are chosen for
hands-on training, ideally using actual business case studies (e.g., telecom, finance, healthcare,
retail, e-commerce, agriculture etc.) One could obtain the datasets from Kaggle or any other
comparable site.
